Dr. Stephen Koos was born in Gyor, Hungary. After having escaped with his parents during the Hungarian revolution in 1956, he settled in Lorain, Ohio where he grew up. Dr. Koos was introduced to optometry at a young age when eyeglasses and contact lenses were prescribed to correct his vision. He knew he wanted to pursue medicine and chose optometry because it allowed him to have a family life as well.
Dr. Koos graduated from Lorain High School. After completing a six year program of undergraduate study and optometry school - Ohio State University and the Ohio State College of Optometry - he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1976. Dr. Koos has been practicing in Lorain County ever since. His specialties include general optometry with emphasis in vision therapy, contact lenses and geriatrics. He is a proud member of the Ohio Optometric Association and American Optometric Association.
Dr. Koos receives professional satisfaction by helping patients improve their quality of life. He was told by a patient that he saved her life by referring her for ocular signs of high cholesterol. Another patient broke down and cried in the office when Dr. Koos prescribed specialty eyeglass prisms that allowed her to move about without dizziness and peripheral motion for the first time in 3 years.
In his spare time, Dr. Koos is a member of the Oberlin School Board for 8 years and served as president for 1 year. He is a past member and president of Oberlin Exchange club and was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader as well. He enjoys spending time with his wife of 40 years, four children, six grandchildren as well as his mother. He also enjoys woodworking, home repair and golf when he can.
